Sammy and Roland's Winter Wedding

Updated: Jan 6, 2020

How we met...

We met when we were both working for Volkswagon, it was my first day and Roland was training me! Within minutes, we established that we were both working there temporarily for a couple of months as we were both off travelling… to Thailand! After three months of working together, we set off on our travels on separate ventures, but we decided to meet up and travel together for a week here and there. After many emotional goodbyes, we both knew we were meant to be together… and the rest they say is history!

The proposal...

We were on holiday in Australia and we did a Whitsunday’s sailing trip, which stopped at the beautiful Whitehaven Beach. Roland was cool as a cucumber, and he was trying to get me to sit down but I was loving life having ‘jumping photos’ on the picturesque beach! He finally realised I wasn’t going to sit down and suggested we took a stroll down the beach. We reached a spot where no one was around, and that’s when he got down on one knee!! It was the most perfect moment!

The dress was...

Perfect! I found wedding dress shopping really difficult; I cannot make decisions, especially one this big! I guess I always thought I would get the ‘yes, this is the dress’ moment, but in all honesty that never happened for me! I went to so many shops and all wedding dresses are that beautiful I struggled to know what I wanted. I got my dress from Serendipity Brides in Weedon and they were so wonderful. I knew I really liked it when I put it on, and when I showed my mum this was the first dress that she cried at, so I knew that was the one I had to have!

It wasn’t until the actual day itself that I fell in love with my dress, and I really couldn’t have loved it more – everything about it really was perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about it and never wanted to take it off… that’s when I got the ‘this is the dress’ moment!

Our favourite part of the day...

The whole day was incredible from start to finish and we loved every second, but the favourite part of the day for both of us was the ceremony. It was the bit we were both so nervous about but it was so incredible. Walking into a room full of all the people you know and love is the most wonderful feeling, and seeing the person you are about to marry was the best moment ever. From that moment on, I felt like it was only me and Roland in the room. It was the happiest moment of my life and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

The idea that we felt really worked on the day...

The venue is so beautiful that I knew I wanted to keep things simple, so we didn’t go overboard with decorations. We simply had jars with tea lights and gypsophilia which worked perfectly, especially as it was a winter wedding, and the jars looked very pretty in the evening! I was also very happy with the popcorn machine and sweet stand, they were a real hit!

Where we feel our budget was really well spent...

We feel the budget was really well spent on the food and the alcohol! We chose to use Portfolio Events for our meal, and the food was incredible and absolutely worth every penny. We have had nothing but compliments about how delicious the meal was! We did all our own alcohol for the day and got it all at bargain prices when supermarkets had the offer of buy 6 bottles and get 25% off. It's amazing that Dodmoor offer the option of doing this and free corkage!

The final bargain and one of our favourite parts of the day was the sparkler arch. I bought all the sparklers for £18 and it was so much fun - it included all the evening guests and made for some amazing pictures!

Finally, if we could give one tip to other couples...

Trust Dodmoor and use as many of the recommended suppliers as you can. They are all so used to working at the venue that it makes it all completely stress free! All of the suppliers we used were absolutely amazing! The staff at Dodmoor have everything under control and take the stress away from you... we would say relax and enjoy every minute, and let Dodmoor do the rest!

A special thanks to Sammy and Roland for sharing their story, and to Matthew Bishop Photography for the beautiful photos x
